BingeReviews - My binge on political domain names before the 2008 election
By admin on Jul 9, 2007 in speculation, BingeReviews, Featured
I’ve been in a bit of a political mood lately, so I decided to use the first official BingeReview post to get comments on a recent binge I made on political domain names.
There’s a bit of a background to this binge….My primary domain investing strategy is to speculate on domains that I believe will become generic at some point in the future. This strategy offers the advantage of being relatively cheap - most of the domains I identify are still available for registration. But, the risk is significant - there is no guarantee that the names will actually become generic (or even well-known).
A few weeks back, I decided I wanted a few political domains before the 2008 US presidential election. I figured that “all the good names were taken” and made a decision to throw my speculative strategy out the window. I started searching the aftermarket to see if any good names were available.
I found very few that interested me, and got a bit frustrated. Then, on a whim, really, I decided to do a bit of brainstorming and see if I could find some good names there will still available for registration.
To my surprise, I found - and grabbed - some decent names. I didn’t realize it until after I binged, but my speculative strategy actually played two roles here:
1. The value of these domains, clearly, depends on the outcome of the 2008 Presidential election;
2. Some of the best domains from this binge (in my eyes) are .us domains…the value of which is still largely unproven
With that as background, here’s my binge on political domain names. In each group, I’ve put the domain(s) at the top that I think has the most potential.

I think I managed to find a few gems. I’m particularly excited about BarackObamas.us, Baracks.us, Obamas.us, HillaryClintons.us, and Hillarys.us. Clearly, the value of these domains depends on the winner. The .us extension is also a major factor. I think the possessive play on the “us” might make the names attractive for certain purposes.
All thoughts and comments - positive and negative - are appreciated!

I think you got some good domain names. However, I’m not yet sold on .us. I think it has the most potential out of the gtdls but am not sure it is going to catch on. However, I think it’s worth a lot more than a .info

I agree on .us domains. That’s the big speculative play with these domains. I think the political angle gives the extension some added value here (hillarys.us is better than a meaningless acmebusiness.us, IMHO), but it’s still not a .com.
These are going to be fun to watch, I think.
I actually disagree re .info. I tend to think that .info domains have tremendous value for generic names that relate to newer subjects that people are looking for information on. If it becomes widely known that .info = information, I think .info could come into it’s own.
But, that’s coming from a guy that owns genericbiologicals.info.
Thanks for the comment.

Matt,
I’m prejudice.
I only like the .com’s because I feel that they’re more natural. The .us ones are good, but I just can’t imagine them getting much traffic, but you will know better than me.
Also, I visited all of the .com’s and I was delited to see that both sides of the isle are investing in adwords.
Great post!

Thanks for the comments. I think we all favor .com’s — it’s really the only top level that has serious traction to it. I’m willing to speculate a bit on .us and .info domains, but a lot needs to happen before those (or any other non-.com’s) takeoff to an appreciable degree.
Sometimes I wonder whether - in the long term - some of the country code top levels will only hold value for unconventional uses, like del.icio.us.
Time will tell. Thanks again for the comment.

Ok lets think about it JoeAmerica.org that is better than JoeAmerica.com or how about my HillaryClintons.info that is good. I like the way you use the s on the end most people forget that can work..I had JamesBrowns.com and gave it up
